Our story

Wilderness Hotels & Safaris is a family run travel company in Finnish Lapland, owned by a local family Lappalainen. In our family there are us, Jouko and Mari, and our four children Essi, Eemeli, Emma and Iida. Our company has four Wilderness Hotels which are all located in Northern Finland. Three of the hotels are located near to the famous Lake Inari and one on the fellside next to the Urho Kekkonen National Park. Theme for the destinations comes from the surrounding nature which makes each destination unique. We value authenticity and that is why you’ll find a lot of natural building materials, art made by the local craftmen, and Scandinavian design from our every destination.

The story of our company began in 2004 when we established our first destination – Nellim. Nellim was a village school for over sixty years and at its top years it had over hundred students from nearby areas. But as people started moving out, they had no choice but to close the doors and move the students to other schools. When the property changed the owner and became our, we started to restore all the buildings. Today you’ll find cosy wilderness rooms, new log cabins, aurora cabins and a beautiful wilderness themed restaurant – all surrounded by beautiful and unique Finnish nature.

In the past years a lot has happened. In 2012 we decided to buy another location, Muotka, from Saariselkä-Kiilopää area and in 2017 we expanded with two new destinations, Inari and Nangu. All our four destinations are surrounded with incredibly beautiful wilderness areas and our main purpose is to show this amazing nature for all our guests. We offer many kinds of outdoor activities with skilful guides. We have both lived in Lapland all our lives and we really enjoy to be in nature all year round. Lapland is in our hearts and we really want to share experiences and Lappish nature with all of you. This is the reason why we have started to do this in the first place. We wish you all very warmly welcome and we really hope that you enjoy your stay with us!

With the kindest regards,

Mari and Jouko Lappalainen
